Eelam Nation editorial: Ends Justify the Means

Ends Justify the Means

[Editorial, Eelam Nation]

The conduct of the recent war and the ensuing defeat of the LTTE is a classic example of the Machiavellian concept taken to its most barbaric extreme.  The end of the war, notwithstanding the means,  achieved two things for the government of Sri Lanka: one, they  defeated the  Tamil militancy temporarily with the aid of the  military and the intelligence  of China, Israel, India and  Pakistan, and more importantly they  accomplished the slaughter of nearly 35,000 Tamil civilians  and the maiming of nearly 15,000  for life as an integral part of the their aggressive and vigorous genocidal mission set in motion in the early 1970s . By this the Sri Lankan state also made up for the absence of pogroms against the Tamil people from 1983 to 2009 which otherwise they would have periodically organized and executed.

President Rajapakse made out   to the world that this was a “humanitarian operation”. In Sinhala racist parlance, perhaps, the killing  tens of thousands of innocent Tamils maiming thousands through  heavy artillery firing and persistent shelling on civilian targets, the use of cluster bombs and chemical weapons, devastation of hospitals, raping thousands of women and young girls subjecting them to all kinds of humiliation, starving  and dehydrating them for months on end, denying infants of milk foods and the withholding  of medicines and medical aid to the sick and the injured constitute the definition of the term, humanitarian operation. During the latter stages of the war, despite pleas of surrender, the remaining Tamil militants were wantonly destroyed defying the relevant norms of humanitarian law merely to show the Sinhala constituency, the Buddhist monks and New Delhi that the LTTE leader had been killed and to flaunt his remains but they had to make do with the corpse of someone else who looked something like Pirapaharan to satisfy their morbid desire. The horrendous spectacle of the ogre of the sadistic abuse of the remains of Tamil female freedom fighters had been in the past seen in videos exhibited by the chauvinistic arm of the Sri Lankan state.

Indeed, the mass killing of the Tamils was also the deliverance of liberation from sufferance in the sense of the Buddhist term “Nibbana” for they are no longer on this earth to suffer the slings of injustice and oppression. This would have pleased the majority of the Buddhist monks, a breed peculiar only  to Sri Lanka, who we are told  were overjoyed  and savoured the thought that their constant preaching and dinning to the powers that be, that the Tamils should  without further delay be put out of their misery did not go unheeded.  Further the Sri Lankan State had been exonerated 1200 years ago, by the principal Buddhist chronicle Mahavamsa a source of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture and history from any sin that might befall them by the killing of Tamils. So there is always a safety net of impunity for the Sri Lankan State in their genocide against the Tamils even in the centuries to come.

Addressing parliament, President Rajapakse adding insult to injury (to use a cliché) upon the Tamils, evincing his absolute hypocrisy and extreme stupidity spoke  in  Tamil much to the extreme annoyance of the Tamil people taking them for suckers. He said that the Tamils would be treated equally. Yes indeed we know that all Tamils without exception will be continued to be regarded terrorists or potential terrorists. Equality is the inalienable right of the Tamil people as any other, which need not be endowed on them by Rajapakse or his brothers in the Sri Lankan parliament. They will continue their own struggle to win their own equality before the law and equality of opportunity within their own justice system and administration hitherto denied by the racist governments.

By conservative estimates there are already nearly 300,000 internally displaced people driven from their homes through starvation and thirst to whom for months on end was sent food and water sufficient only for 70,000 people, not by any error in calculation but by deliberate design.

We will not repeat here the most uncivilized forms of atrocities committed on these people interned within barbed wired fences but merely mention that already children have been abducted by the paramilitary forces loyal to the government suspected of being child soldiers, the number of white van abductions has increased from within and in some instances both parents have been taken away from little children left behind to fend for themselves and die of hunger and neglect.  Every Tamil man, woman and child incarcerated within these camps  has to prove that they are not a terrorist doomed to remain a prisoner within the camp to avoid  being taken away for questioning and the consequences there of. For how many years we cannot tell.  As to how they could prove that they are not terrorists defies comprehension. Every police station in the country is to become a detention centre, apparently worse than “Abu Graib” where Tamils suspected of being terrorists can be incarcerated indefinitely, eventually to be tortured and killed.

We once again,  as in  previous editorials, hold fears for the safety of the  three doctors  Sathiamoorthy, Varatharajah and Shanmugarajah who had fearlessly and courageously at the risk of their lives in the wake of repeated bombardments of their hospitals looked after the patients  announcing to the world of the killings of the sick and the infants. They are also are key witnesses to genocide of this nature.  Ban ki Moon visited Sri Lanka to assess the humanitarian situation for himself.  Given the disgraceful conduct of the Humanitarian section of the UN on this issue, we have very little doubt that ki Moon based on the doctored report by the “impartial negotiator” Vijay Nambiar will tacitly approve of the conduct of the Sri Lankan government.
