Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC) is planning to wind up its operations to find out persons reported missing since August 11, 2006 by closing the files opened on missing persons.
It should be mentioned here that it is yet to be known that what has happened to more than 800 young men and women gone missing from 1996 to 2000 in Jaffna peninsula after being arrested by government armed forces.
Quoting the families who lodged complaints in this connection, HRC officials claimed that the missing persons had gone abroad.
Officials said thousands of complaints have been lodged with Jaffna HRC in connection with missing of young men and women in Jaffna peninsula including those who had been arrested by government armed forces.
The steps of the HRC Jaffna office is indirectly justifying the claim of Sri Lankan government that persons reported missing after arrest by its armed forces have left the country, relatives of missing persons complain.
They said Jaffna HRC officials never took any pragmatic steps to find out the missing persons.
Now the complainants are being called to Jaffna HRC office to find out whether they have any new information regarding those gone missing.
