The Ceylon Worker’s Congress (CWC) on Wednesday blasted the government for reducing security to Parliamentarians whose lives are threatened and need additional security.
“We condemn the reduction of security to parliamentarians who had been assessed as high risk and had been granted additional security. These parliamentarians are now deprived of their right to express themselves and act independently on behalf of their people”, the CWC in a statement.
The statement came a day after the Government reduced the security personnel of Western Peoples’ Front leader and Civil Monitoring Commission on Extra-judicial Killings convener Mano Ganeshan.
The statement said, “Members of Parliament to act independently on behalf of their people should have a sense of safety and security. Hence, provision of adequate security is an essential requirement”.
The CWC said it is the Government’s responsibility to provide security in keeping with the assessed risk faced by these parliamentarians.
